Potential Free Agents 2007
Name: Jamaal Magloire
Ratings: B- D+ D B+ B C
Expected Contract: 5 million starting over 4 years
Comment: Magloire seems to be undervalued in the NBL which is why I see him only receiving a 5 million dollar starting salary. He should be considered one of the leagues best big men with stats of 13.6ppg, 11.4rpg and 1.1bpg. Magloire would be a very handy starting center for a playoff team come next season. With Brad Miller and Shareef Abdur-Rahim down low, I can see Magloire moving teams next season.
Name: Chris Kaman
Ratings: B- C- D+ B B B
Expected Contract: 8 million starting over 4 years
Comment: It is very hard to determine how much Kaman will receive this off season. The 7’0”, LA Clippers big man is averaging stellar numbers of 15.6ppg and 8.9rpg at only 24 years of age. His B potential is rather ambiguous which is why I think a team will only offer him a 4 year contract over a 6 year one.
Name: Darko Milicic
Ratings: C+ C- C- B+ C+ A
Expected Contract: 4 million starting over 6 years
Comment: Darko will be paid due to the amount of possible potential he may have. Averaging 7.2ppg, 6.3rpg and 1.0bpg in over 20 minutes for the Orlando Magic, expect see him back in Florida next year. Darko will receive a lot of attention this off-season due to his potential to get better. The team that signs him will offer a mid range first year offer over 6 years to ensure they don’t miss out on any possible outbursts he may have.
Name: Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Ratings: B C D+ B+ B- C
Expected Contract: 8 million starting over 4
Comment: Averaging 16, 10 and 2 blocks per game for the 34-14 Cavs, expect to see Cleveland chase down Zydrunas and lure him back to Ohio. Proving to be a sensational player for the Cavs alongside fellow big men Marcus Camby and Zach Randolph, Big Z is finally getting it right by helping Cleveland win whilst having a career year on his contract year.
Name: Eddy Curry
Ratings: B+ D+ D- B- C B
Expected Contract: 6 million starting over 5
Comment: A lack lustre rebounder with some scoring ability, Curry will be overpaid this off-season most likely by the New York Knicks who will try and retain him if they can do it whilst keeping under the hard cap. If they can manage to do so, the Knicks will try and keep the Curry/Chandler connection alive for years to come.
Name: Caron Butler
Ratings: B B C B+ C B
Expected Contract: 8 million starting over 5
Comment: Butler is already a solid player and definitely has room to improve. Butler is currently averaging 16, 7 and 3 for the Wizards this season, numbers that are sure to impress opposing teams trying to take him in this year’s free agency period. Butler is playing alongside Jamison and Arenas at the moment and Washington will try and keep it that way by doing everything possible to keep him back in a Wizards uniform.
Name: Tracy McGrady
Ratings: A- A- B- B+ C C
Expected Contract: Maximum
Comment: Is there any doubt that a guy averaging 28.4ppg, 7.0rpg and a little over 3 and a half assists per game should get a maximum contract this off season? No. McGrady will receive a large contract next year, who that will be from is still undetermined. Houston would like to think they will be the ones handing over the cheque although their poor 18-18 record (currently) may prove to be a deciding factor in his final decision. Will T-Mac stick around and work on the Yao project or pack his bags for a better franchise?
Name: Boris Diaw
Ratings: B C B+ B C+ B
Expected Contract: 10 million starting over 6 years
Comment: Diaw is loved very much in the NBL and definitely carries a lot of hype around with him. Averaging only 12, 6 and 4 for Phoenix this year, the potential for him to get better and play positions 1 through 4 will entice GM’s enough to give him a big contract this off-season. I can see the Suns trying to bring him back next year although don’t be surprised to see him leave. Contract submissions for the presence of Diaw will vary so predicting his contract is very difficult. I would say mine is very optimistic however it very well may happen.
Name: T.J. Ford
Ratings: C+ C+ B+ B+ C- B
Expected Contract: 8 million starting over 6 years
Comment: Averaging 15, 9 and 5, TJ Ford is having a very nice year for the Toronto Raptors. Although they are using, many like the style and roster of this Toronto team which is why we should expect to see T-Dot resign TJ next season. With Bargnani and Bosh alongside him, Fords run and gun style of play fits with the team like a glove. Toronto will want him back most definitely.
Name: Andre Miller
Ratings: B- C A B+ C- C
Expected Contract:
Comment: In my opinion, Miller will get paid this off season, and deservedly too. Miller has shown that he is a top notch point guard averaging 13, 8, 4 and only 2 turnovers per game. He is playing big minutes in Denver so don’t expect Dre to leave however if a bigger contract comes along, he may just pack up and go.
Name: Kirk Hinrich
Ratings: C+ B+ B+ B+ D+ B
Expected Contract: Maximum
Comment: Although his stats aren’t as great as Millers or Fords, Hinrich will receive a bigger contract. He has more potential than the two aforementioned and will most likely blossom into a better player. He is playing within a good core of young players in Chicago at the moment so seeing him leave the Windy city is unlikely.
